In the aftermath of World War II, young Kyo and his younger sister, Setsuko, lose their mother to an American air raid. The orphaned siblings struggle to survive in the devastated Japanese countryside. Unable to reconcile with their only remaining relative, Kyo takes refuge in a ruined air-raid shelter, and desperately tries to protect Setsuko by stealing food. However, their food supply dwindles, and they cling to small moments of happiness as they face the harsh realities of war.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Nossak Shōzō, who experienced the war firsthand, this film is considered a masterpiece in animation and film history, earning worldwide praise. With its delicate portrayal of human beauty and cruelty, this film, directed by the Academy Award-nominated and Studio Ghibli co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, is a unique artistic work.
